Mangroves are found around the coastal areas, lagoons and on river banks. They serve not only in balancing the environment but also in sustaining water related human activities.
At present, most of the mangroves are being destroyed – wantonly or for economic benefit – by man. Encroachments and illegal land fillings, dumping of waste and garbage, especially saw dust and wood waste in Bolgoda, and the cutting down of some species of plants, notably the balsa for the hand crafting of traditional masks are routinely taking place. On the other hand, there is destruction through ignorance and lack of understanding and knowledge.
In this regard, EMACE has initiated a number of activities, with stakeholder participation, to reverse this process through education and awareness creation among the general public.
