Rehabilitation And Conservation of Bolgoda Lake

EMACE has made inroads in this regard over a long period of time. It has mobilized stakeholders, mainly the community living in the surrounding areas of the lake, in to CBOs and educated them in matters of conservation and the sustainable use of the waters.

More importantly, EMACE has launched a three-year project, a community based initiative for conservation of Bolgoda, with the assistance of the German based Global Nature Fund/Living Lakes, The main project components are:
• Mangrove restoration – replanting the destroyed area of about 5 hectares
• Establishment of a mangrove nursery to facilitate the above
• Setting up of an Environment Education Centre
• Introduction of organic farming and the establishment of two model farms
• Introduction of solar lamps for night fishing; provision of fishing nets and education in sustainable fishing
• Construction of 8 model houses with sewage purification in a green filter system
The beneficiaries and the stake holders would form into working groups for overseeing the protection and sustainable use of the mangroves
