SalesMangroves are found around the coastal areas, lagoons and on river banks. They serve not only in balancing the environment but also in sustaining water related human activities.
At present, most of the mangroves are being destroyed – wantonly or for economic benefit – by man. Encroachments and illegal land fillings, dumping of waste and garbage, especially saw dust and wood waste in Bolgoda, and the cutting down of some species of plants, notably the balsa for the hand crafting of traditional masks are routinely taking place. On the other hand, there is destruction through ignorance and lack of understanding and knowledge.
In this regard, EMACE has initiated a number of activities, with stakeholder participation, to reverse this process through education and awareness creation among the general public.
Among the initiatives taken are:1. To encourage school children and other interested groups to replant the damaged or destroyed mangroves. EMACE has established a steering committee consisting of 10 schools as an initial step.
2. EMACE is developing a five hectare mangrove replanting area in Bandaragama
3. Refraining from the use of pollythene and the introduction of plastic re-usable pots in mangrove plant nurseries.
4. Introduction of organic farming by popularizing the making and use of compost fertilizer.
5. Establishing a mangrove plant breeding centre / nursery. This centre is capable of producing as much as 17,000 plants with in three weeks. Excess plants would be sold to other interested parties.
