Solar Lamps & LED

Solar model lamps with LED bulbs.

The objective of introducing this ' Fishermen's Torch' model lamp was to motivate the fisher community in the area to use this solar lamp in place of the normal kerosene oil lamp for night fishing. The kerosene oil lamp tends to contaminate the water of the lake when used for night fishing which also is detrimental to fish breeding and is a threat to the entire eco system. It was estimated that the fishermen could save Rs. 9000/= per month on fuel if they used these solar model lamps.

Solar powered units for shrimp traps

The solar powered units have also been introduced to the fishermen who indulge in inland fishing. This unit is used at night to obtain a richer harvest of shrimps as they usually get allured to light. This in turn does not expel any harmful substance to the water.

We also have distributed traditional fishing equipment to these inland fishermen to encourage them on sustainable fishing and to improve their livelihood. Formation of fisher farmer groups from various areas of the lake have formed their own committees and we have carried out many workshops for these fishermen with the support of the local government officials of the area and the ministry of fisheries. These fisher farmers have been made aware of the correct ways fishing to maintain sustainable fishing protecting the fry.
